Saint-Jonh, River

© Charlotte Cormier
The town is located at the mouth of the Saint-Jean river after which it is named. For several dozen years, the river was a natural border between Québec and Labrador.

The river is navigable for 50 km and is known for its salmon trenches. A canoe ride will expose you to breathtaking landscapes. You will be genuinely impressed by the tall mountains bordering the river, and the numerous rapids and waterfalls.

The association in charge of protecting the Saint-Jean river runs a fishing outfitter for the local population. The fishing camps stationed at two different sites along the river are quite comfortable and relaxing.

The sandbar that stretches to the river mouth is an ideal spot for bird watching. Ospreys are a common sight.
